What is the fee for obtaining a Georgia certificate of title for my vehicle?

Standard Fees*

  • Original title fee is $18.00
  • Replacement title fee is $8.00

Additional Fees

  • $10.00 title penalty is due if you fail to apply for a Georgia title in your name within thirty-days (30) of the vehicle's purchase or transfer date (as of July 1, 2008). If the vehicle's current title or registration certificate from a non-title state or country is issued in your name, then this title penalty is not due.
  • $10.00 title penalty is due for an altered purchase or transfer date on the transfer document (title, certificate of origin, etc.) transferring ownership of the vehicle to you.
  • $10.00 additional title penalty is due if you previously applied for a Georgia title in your name for this vehicle & your application was returned requesting additional action before title issuance & compliance is not made within sixty-days (60) of the accompanying letter's date.
  • $10.00 additional special handling fee for each title application processed through our Customer Service Operations.
  • Effective January 1, 2006 - When applying for a Georgia title for a vehicle that was purchased from an out-of-state/country dealer or business, Georgia sales tax must be paid at the time of application or proof must be submitted that the sales tax has already been paid.  A Georgia title and license plate will not be issued until any sales tax due is paid.  The amount of sales tax due is based on the vehicle’s purchase price or the vehicle’s fair market value if a sales invoice is not submitted.   Click here to determine the sales tax rate in your county.  The published sales tax rates for counties include the State of Georgia’s sales tax rate.  For additional information regarding sales tax, please contact the DOR Regional Office serving your county.

Pay all fees due with cash, check or money order payable to the agency processing your application, Office of the Tax Commissioner or Department of Revenue. Please do not remit cash through the mail! Contact your county tag office for other acceptable methods of payment.

Save money! Most title applications processed at any of the County Tag Offices in this state result in the printing & mailing of the titles by the Motor Vehicle Division within three (3) business days of the county's entry & approval at no additional charge.

*Applications for titles in the name of a state or federal government agency do not require a title fee. Applications for titles in the name of a city or county government agency require a title fee.
