Notarization Requirements
Motor Vehicle Forms and/or Documents
Signature(s) on all affidavits and powers of attorney used to register
and/or title a vehicle in this state require notarization. A notary
public is required to not only place his or her signature on the
document or form but he or she must also affix his or her notary
seal or stamp and the date his or her notary commission expires.
Before a notary public places his or her signature and seal or
stamp to any form or document, they must know the person who is
signing or should ask for positive (picture) identification (valid
driver's license or government-issued identification card). A notary
public cannot notarize his or her own signature nor can they continue
to notarize documents or forms after his or her commission expires.
A notary's signature and his or her name on his or her seal or stamp
must be readable. To ensure that a Georgia notary public's commission
is valid as of the date of signing, a check of the notary database
may be made.
Notarization Requirements for Out-of-State
Forms/Documents
As a general rule, if there is a space provided for a notary public's
signature and seal or stamp on the out-of-state or jurisdiction
title, form, or document, then the signature(s) on this document
or form must be notarized and the notary public must affix his or
her signature, seal or stamp and the date his or her commission
expires affixed to the form or document. This is required for out-of-state
documents and forms presented to obtain a Georgia title. A Georgia
notary public is always required to affix his or her seal or stamp
and the date his or her commission expires on any form or document
where he or she notarizes a signature.
