What is needed to register and obtain a Georgia title and license plate for my "new" vehicle?
*Important: If the manufacturer's certificate of origin is assigned to a dealer who is licensed to sell only used vehicles, the dealer must obtain a title in their name before transferring ownership. When the first retail customer applies for a Georgia title in their name based on the title issued in the dealer's name, the title when issued will reflect the vehicle's status as "used". This does not apply to certificates of origin assigned to a franchise or new motor vehicle dealership. Definitions: * A manufacturer's’ certificate of origin is a legal document issued by the vehicle's manufacturer certifying the vehicle's origin. This document should contain the following information: 1. A complete description of the vehicle: Year model, vehicle make, model name and/or number, body style, weight, and the vehicle's identification number (VIN) as shown on the serial plate affixed to the vehicle by the manufacturer. 2. Space on the front of this document for the manufacturer to enter the name and address of the purchasing party, usually a motor vehicle dealer, and, 3. Additional assignment spaces on the reverse side of this document to allow for the continued transfer of ownership of the vehicle (From licensed dealer to licensed dealer or from a licensed dealer to a retail customer). The first retail customer must obtain a title in their name before selling or transferring the ownership of the vehicle (when the vehicle requires a title). 4. Contain security features that deter counterfeiting or illegal reproduction and allow alterations or erasures to any information to be visible to the naked eye. 5. This document (properly assigned showing a complete and correct chain of ownership) should accompany the first retail customer’s application for a title. This document is commonly referred to as the vehicle’s birth certificate. It is also called a statement of origin; MSO, etc.
