What do I do with the title for a scrapped, dismantled or demolished vehicle?

Georgia law (§40-3-36 of the OCOGA) requires any registered owner or their agent to do the following when a vehicle is either scrapped, dismantled or demolished or is damaged to the extent that its restoration to an operable condition would require the replacement of the front clip assembly (includes the fenders, hood, and bumper); the rear clip assembly (includes the quarter panels) and the floor panel assembly; the top assembly (excluding a soft top or convertible top); the frame; and a complete side (includes the fenders, door and quarter panel):

  • Mail or deliver the vehicle's original valid Georgia title and Georgia license plate (tag), when left on the vehicle, to: Attention: Salvage Unit Motor Vehicle Division, within seventy-two (72) hours for cancellation. The title should be issued in the submitter's name(s) or properly assigned to the submitter. Do not submit out-of-state/country titles or license plates.
  • Attach a signed letterhead statement containing a complete description of the vehicle: Year model, make of vehicle, the vehicle's identification number (VIN), the title number for the Georgia title being submitted, and the vehicle's Georgia license plate number (when a Georgia tag was left on the vehicle and is being submitted). This signed statement must include the disposition of the vehicle (e.g., Vehicle demolished, sold for parts only, etc.)
  • A completed T-158 form (Report of and/or Surrender of Georgia License Plate) must accompany the title, tag (if available) and the signed statement. Click on the form name and number to complete the form on-line for printing, signing and submission.

A receipt for the title and/or license plate will be provided, upon request, when an extra copy of the letter and a stamped self-addressed envelope is submitted with the title.
