Our bank holds the first security interest in a vehicle but our customer’s title is missing. How can we obtain a replacement Georgia title?

A security interest holder is considered a personal representative of a vehicle owner if their security interest holder is recorded on the vehicle owner(s)' current Georgia Title and their security interest has not been satisfied. Under these conditions, an authorized employee of the recorded security interest holder may sign a replacement title application for the owner(s) when the original current title is missing.

Submit the following to either State Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) or your local county tax commissioner’s office:

A completed MV-1 title application – typed or printed electronically or legibly by hand in blue or black ink, except signatures, in the record owner(s)' name(s) reflecting their current address.  Please be sure to show the name and address of each unsatisfied lien and/or security interest holder(s) in the order perfected.

  • The owner(s) can sign the application;
  • A person the owner(s) have named in a power of attorney can sign the application (the original power of attorney authorizing this signing must be submitted with the title application); or,
  • A person that is directly employed with the recorded security interest holder on the current Georgia Title record may sign this application.   If an employee signs, the employee’s position with the company must be printed beside the employee’s signature.   The company’s name should be printed above their signature.
  • Except for the owner’s Georgia address, the information on the replacement title application must be the same information as recorded on the original title.
  • A letter from the security interest holder on their letterhead stationery requesting the replacement title in the owner’s name(s) must be submitted.  
  • The letter must include the vehicle’s year model; make of vehicle and the vehicle's identification number (VIN) and an authorized representative of the security interest holder must sign the letter.
  • $8.00 replacement title application fee.
  • $10.00 special handling fee if the title application is processed by either the in-person or mail-in expedited Customer Service Operations at State Motor Vehicle Division. Pay all fees due with cash, check or money order payable to the office processing the transaction, Office of the Tax Commissioner or State Motor Vehicle Division.   Do not remit cash through the mail!

Persons processing title applications in-person through MVD’s in-person Customer Service Operations or their county tax commissioner’s office will be required to show their valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card and proof that they are employed with the security interest holder (i.e. Business card, signed letterhead statement from their manager advising that he or she is authorized to conduct business on their company's behalf., etc.)

Save money! Apply for the replacement title at the tax commissioner's office where, you, the security interest holder is located. Most title applications processed by the county tax commissioners’ offices in this state result in the printing and mailing of the titles by State Motor Vehicle Division within three (3) business days of the county’s entry and approval at no additional charge.
