For vehicles requiring a Georgia title, you should apply for a Georgia title as soon as possible after you purchase or acquire ownership of the vehicle or for a new resident, as soon as possible after you move to this state. Click here for where to apply for a Georgia title.

When your vehicle requires a Georgia title, you will be unable to register your vehicle and obtain a Georgia license plate (tag) or to transfer an existing Georgia license plate to the vehicle without a Georgia title already issued in your name or without applying for a title at the time of registration.

You have thirty (30) days from the purchase or transfer date or the date you establish residency in this state to register and obtain a Georgia tag or tag transfer for your vehicle. If you fail to register during this thirty (30) days period, you will be subject to fines if stopped by law enforcement.

• Avoid being charged a $10.00 title penalty by applying for your Georgia title within ninety (90) days of the vehicle's purchase or transfer date.
  • If your vehicle is currently titled in another state in your name, this title penalty is not due.
• An additional $10.00 title penalty is due if an application for a Georgia title was previously submitted in your name(s) and returned requesting additional action before title issuance and compliance has not been made within sixty (60) days of the accompanying letter's date.
