When and where must I renew my vehicle's license plate (tag)?

When and Where

Renew your vehicle's Georgia license plate (tag) at the Tax Commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where you currently reside during the primary owner's registration period. The primary owner is the owner shown first on the vehicle's title or tag registration certificate (for vehicles not requiring a Georgia title). For a business owned and/or operated vehicle, renew the license plate (tag) at the Tax Commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where your business is located during the primary owner's registration period.

IRP Tags

Commercial vehicles that are based in Georgia, travel in Georgia and other states and jurisdictions, and are to be registered under the International Registration Plan (IRP) should be registered with this Department's IRP Unit of the Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Click here for the registration periods for these vehicles. Contact the IRP Unit for additional information.

Important: The County Tax Commissioners' offices in this state do not issue IRP tags.

Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer and Transporter Tags

If you obtained this type of tag at the beginning of the current tag cycle (2004-2005), these tag(s) are valid for two years and expire December 31, 2005. Click here, for more information regarding these type tags.

Important: The County Tax Commissioners' offices in this state do not issue these type tags. These types of tags are issued by this Department's Special Tags Unit of the Motor Vehicle Division. Contact the Special Tags Unit for more information.

When to Renew:

There are three (3) different types of registration systems in Georgia:   Year-round registration (in the majority of counties); four-month staggered registration (Talbot county only); and a four month non-staggered registration system.   Your registration period depends on what county you, the primary owner, reside. The primary owner of a vehicle is the owner whose name is shown first on your vehicle's title and/or tag registration certificate (tag receipt) for vehicles not requiring a title.

Counties With Year-Round Registration

If you are an individual and not a business who resides in one of the following counties, your registration period would be the thirty-day (30) period of time ending at midnight on the birthday of the owner whose name is shown first on your vehicle's title and/or tag registration certificate (tag receipt).
