When Must I Renew My Georgia IRP Tags?

Your application to renew your Georgia IRP license plates (tags) must be received by the Georgia IRP Unit of Motor Vehicle Division two- (2) months before the expiration date of your IRP license plates. Your renewal notice (large envelope containing forms & instructions) will be mailed to you three- (3) months before the expiration date of your IRP license plates.

The deadline for renewing your IRP license plates is the last day of your IRP registration renewal period, the last day of the month assigned to the first letter of your last name if you are an individual or the first character of your business name if you are a business. Click here to determine your registration renewal period (month).

If you do not renew your Georgia IRP license plates, your vehicles cannot be legally driven after the last day of your IRP registration renewal period (month).   Click here to determine your registration renewal period.

Important:   The registrant is responsible for filing a renewal application even if they do not receive a renewal notice.   The registrant has the option of completing Schedule A (Form T-138), Schedule B (Form T-139) & Schedule C (Form T-140) if a renewal notice is not received.

The Georgia IRP Unit of Motor Vehicle Division issues IRP license plates (tags); the County Tax Commissioners' offices in this state do not.

.Definition:

*"IRP" is the abbreviation for the International Registration Plan. IRP is a plan or a registration reciprocity agreement among all U.S. states (except Alaska and Hawaii) and applicable Canadian Providence. IRP allows for the registration of commercial and privately owned vehicles that travel in two (2) or more states or jurisdictions. Under IRP, the base state issues the license plate & cab card & collects & dispenses the registration fees due each member state/jurisdiction in which the vehicle travels.
