When, where and what is needed to transfer my Georgia
license plate to another vehicle I've purchased or acquired?
When to Transfer?
You may transfer your valid Georgia license plate
from a vehicle you no longer own to your newly purchased or acquired
vehicle at your county
tax commissioner's office within thirty- (30) days of the vehicle's
purchase or acquisition date when you are not obtaining a
new license plate for the vehicle.
To be able to transfer your license plate, both
vehicles must require the same price and type license plate. A license
plate issued for a pick-up truck can be transferred to an automobile
because they are issued the same price ($20.00) and type license
plate. You cannot transfer the license plate for your trailer (
$12) or a vehicle weighing 14,001 or more lbs. to an automobile
or pick-up truck, or vice versa, because they are issued different
type/price license plates. Click
here to view our rate chart showing the different regular-issue
license plates and the annual registration fee for each.

Where to Transfer?
Apply for the transfer of your license plate between
vehicles at the tax
commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where you currently
reside. For business owned and operated vehicles, transfer your
tag at the tax commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where
your business is located.
What is needed to transfer my license
plate?
If you do not already have a Georgia
certificate of title issued in your name for your newly purchased
or acquired vehicle (when a Georgia title is required), you must
apply for a title at the time you transfer your license plate. Click
here to see if your vehicle requires a Georgia certificate of
title.
To transfer both the title and license plate, submit
the following to your county tax commissioner's office.
- Show your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification
card if you apply in person. Some counties, that allow transfers
by mail, may require you to submit a copy of your valid Georgia
driver' s license or state-issued identification card. Click
here to view the department's policy regarding identification
and applications for license plates and/or titles.
- Original valid license plate registration certificate or
a legible copy of same for the vehicle you no longer own.
- A completed
DOR Tag/Title Application* - typed, electronically completed
and printed or printed legibly by-hand in blue or black ink
in your full legal name for the newly acquired vehicle and signed.
If jointly owned, each owner must sign. A natural
person's full legal name would be his or her complete
name as it appears on his or her valid Georgia driver's
license or Georgia identification card. For natural persons,
enter each owner's valid Georgia driver's license number
or Georgia identification card number in the spaces
provided. Click
here to view this department's policy regarding identification
and applications for Georgia license plates and/or titles. Click
on any form name or number on this page to complete it on-line
for printing, signing and submission.
- *If all owner(s) go in person to their county tax commissioner's
office with their valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia
identification card, the required documents and applicable
fees and taxes, this application can be completed online
and printed for your signature(s) and processing.
- Original valid title or manufacturer's statement of origin
properly assigned to you using your full legal name(s) when you
are also applying for a title.
- If you are applying for only a license plate transfer
because the newly acquired vehicle does not
require a Georgia title or a Georgia title has already been
issued in your name for the vehicle, you will be asked to
show proof of ownership (e.g. Title issued in your name or
properly assigned to you; or the vehicle's license plate registration
certificate and bill(s) of sale). A complete chain of ownership
must be shown from the registered or titled owner(s) up through
you, the current owner(s).
- If a Georgia title has already been issued in your name,
then a check of the database will be made to verify.
- Your newly purchased or acquired vehicle must be continuously
covered with Georgia liability insurance for it to be registered
and legally operated. Non-motorized vehicles (i.e. trailers) do
not require coverage.
Click here to read information regarding insurance coverage
requirements and acceptable proof of coverage.
- Proof that your vehicle has passed an emission's inspection
if you live in one of the thirteen (13) metro-Atlanta area counties
where an emission's inspection is required. For requiring counties,
exempt vehicles, locations of inspection stations, cost of an
inspection, directions, etc., call the Georgia Clean Air Force
at 1-800-449-2471 or click
here to connect to their web site.
- Pay all fees and taxes due with either cash, check or money
order payable to the Office of the Tax Commissioner. Please
do not remit cash through the mail! Some counties accept
credit cards.
- $5.00 license plate transfer fee.
- $18 title fee, when your vehicle requires a Georgia title
and a title is being applied at the time of the tag transfer.
- $1.00 mailing fee if your registration certificate is to
be mailed to you.
- $10.00 title penalty is due when you fail to apply for
a title in your name within ninety-days (90) of the vehicle's
purchase or transfer date. This fee is not
due if a Georgia title has already been issued in your name
or when a Georgia title is not required.
- If you are transferring your license plate during your
registration
period, you must comply with all of the requirements of
license plate renewal. Click
