Mail-in and In-Person Renewal

To renew your vehicle's tag registration by mail or in-person, submit the following to the county tag office in the county in Georgia where you currently reside during your registration period. Click here for more information about where to renew your vehicle's tag registration.

  • Your renewal notice (if you have received one that reflects correct and complete information), or a completed tag and/or title application (Form MV-1). The application must be typed, electronically completed and printed or legibly hand printed in the registered owner(s)' full legal name(s). An individual's full legal name(s) would be his/her complete name as shown on his/her valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. This application must be signed. If jointly owned, each owner's full legal name, valid Georgia driver's license number or Georgia identification card number and signature is required. If you received a renewal notice from your County Tag office, you should use the renewal notice to renew your vehicle's license plate when the renewal notice reflects complete and correct information including your name, address, the vehicle's description and the amount of ad valorem tax due.
  • If you apply in-person, you must show your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. Some counties, that allow tag registration renewal by mail, may require you to submit a copy of your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card with your application for renewal.
  • Your vehicle must be covered with Georgia liability insurance. Non-motorized vehicles and vehicle exempt from registration in this state do not require insurance coverage. Click here to view a list of vehicles that are exempt from registration in this state. Click here to read important information regarding liability insurance coverage requirements and acceptable proof of coverage.
  • Proof that your vehicle has passed an emission's inspection, if required for your vehicle in your county. For a list of requiring counties, exempt vehicles, inspection station locations, directions, cost, etc., please call the Georgia Clean Air Force at: call 1-800-449-2471 or click here to connect to their web site.
  • Pay all fees and/or taxes due (as shown on your calculated renewal notice) with cash, check or money order payable to the Office of the Tax Commissioner. Please do not remit cash through the mail. Some counties accept credit cards. The fees and taxes that are generally due at the time of renewal are: Annual registration fee ($20.00 for most passenger cars and light weight pick-up trucks); applicable ad valorem tax, annual special tag fee (when your vehicle is currently registered with a special tag that requires an annual special tag fee); any penalties for late renewal (when you do not renew during your registration period), and $1.00 mailing fee if your renewal decal is to be mailed to you. Click here to calculate ad valorem tax. Click here to view our rate chart showing the different types of regular-issue tags and the annual registration fee associated with each. Click here to view a list of available special tags. From the special tag list, click on the applicable type of special tag to determine if the tag requires an additional annual special tag fee). You may wish to contact your County Tag office for the total fees due. Click here for more information regarding penalties for late renewal.
