How can I obtain a serial plate and license plate for my homemade trailer?

Homemade trailers are required to have a serial plate affixed before the trailer can be registered and a license plate (tag) issued. To obtain a serial plate for your homemade trailer, submit the following to the Tax Commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where you reside:

  • A completed MV-1 application - typed or printed in blue or black ink electronically or legibly by-hand, except signature(s), in the trailer owner(s)' full legal name(s) and signed. If jointly owned, each owner must sign. A natural person's full legal name would be his or her complete name as it appears on his or her valid Georgia driver's license or state-issued identification card. For natural persons, enter each owner's valid Georgia driver's license number or Georgia identification card number in the spaces provided. Leave the space provided for the vehicle's identification number blank. If all owners go in person with their valid Georgia driver's license or state-issued identification card, this application can be completed and printed for your signature(s) and processing. The year model of the trailer will be the year the trailer was built. The make of the trailer will be "Homemade". Click on any form name or number on this page to complete it on-line for printing, signing and submission. • A completed T-23 Homemade Trailer Affidavit - typed or printed in blue or black ink electronically or legibly by-hand, except signature(s), in the trailer owner(s)' full legal name(s). The signature(s) on this form must be notarized. In addition to signing, the notary public must affix his or her seal or stamp and the date his or her commission expires.
  • $12.00 license plate fee.
  • Any applicable ad valorem tax. Contact your county Tax Commissioner's office to determine if this tax is due and if due, the amount.
  • $1.00 mailing fee if the license plate is to be mailed to you.

Pay all fees due with cash, check or money order payable to the Office of the Tax Commissioner. Please do not remit cash through the mail!

Upon receipt of the above listed fees and forms, properly completed, your county Tax Commissioner's office will issue you, the trailer's owner(s), a serial plate. This serial plate is often referred to as a "T" serial plate since the plate number begins with a T. The county will also provide you with a partially completed T-22C (Permission for County Assigned Serial Number Plate - For a Homemade Trailer) form.

You should affix or have some one affix the serial plate to your homemade trailer with rivets and have a law a Georgia enforcement officer or your county Tax Commissioner or his or her designee complete the T-22C form certifying that the serial plate has been affixed to the trailer.

You should return the completed T-22C form to your county Tax Commissioner's office for the issuance of a license plate and a registration certificate (Tag receipt).

The number on the serial plate should be used as the vehicle identification number (VIN) or serial number in any subsequent motor vehicle transactions.

Georgia does not issue titles for homemade trailers.

Important: Manufacturers who manufacture trailers are required to affix a unique serial plate to each trailer they manufacture. If the manufacturer-issued serial plate is missing, click here to view what is needed to obtain a replacement serial plate.
