Format for Dealer-Issue Temporary Tags

Acceptable Format
Dealer-issue temporary tags shall:
  • Be the same size as a state-issue license plate.
  • Be made of heavy stock paper to resist deterioration or fading due to exposure to all outside weather conditions.
  • Provide a rectangular box centered at the bottom of the tag
    • Not smaller than 8" & 2" high;
    • Consisting of a white or light colored background for you to write the expiration date (thirty days from the purchase date).
      • To be inscribed clearly &legibly with black or blue permanent ink or marker.
      • In dimensions of no less than 2" inches high & 8" inches wide.
      • Including expiration date (First three characters of the month; numeric day & two-digit year)
      • Do not use a pencil, ballpoint pen or similar instrument.
      • With a holographic security image that shows immediate signs of tampering.
  • No smaller than .5" high & 7" long.
  • Containing a delaminating feature that when the hologram is tampered with or separated from the tag or overlay, it shall cause the holographic image to be destroyed.
    • With a clear write-resistant overlay with security features so that any attempt to change or modify the expiration date.
  • Shall repel commercially available inks & marking pens.
  • Ink should not adhere to it & shall show clear round beads.
  • Provide a line above the rectangular box to write the vehicle description (Year model, make & vehicle identification number) & your dealership's permanent MVS assigned twelve-digit (12) number, as shown on your current receipt for your master dealer tag.
  • May reflecting your dealership's name & address.
The Law Prohibits
  • The words "tag applied for" or similar statements from being placed anywhere on the tag.
    Restricts dealers whose primary business is the sale of salvage & other vehicles where total loss claims have been paid from issuing temporary tags.
  • Prohibits you from renewing or extending the tag beyond the initial expiration date.
  • Do not place the tag on any other vehicle other than the one you sold.
  • Do not issue to non-self-propelled vehicles (i.e. Trailer, etc.).
  • Do not issue to a demonstrator, for your employee's use or for transporting vehicles from one location other another. In these cases, use your state-issue dealer tag.
  • These tags shall not resemble any license plate or temporary permit issued by the state.
  • Do not issue to a vehicle that is to be registered under IRP (International Registration Plan).
  • You cannot charge a fee for this tag.
Storage and Shipping Requirements
  • These tags shall be stored in a secure area (not visible or accessible except in the course of a business transaction).
  • Delivery or shipment of tags shall be secure in order that any delivery is traceable from the point of origin to the point of delivery.

    These tags are not available through the state or County Tax Commissioners' offices. It is your responsibility to procure temporary tags. You may wish to contact one of the following dealer associations for assistance:
