Motor Vehicle Tag, Title, and/or Lien Information

Motor vehicle tag, title and lien records maintained by this department's Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), are private. Only authorized persons can receive information from our files.

Who is Authorized to Receive Tag, Title and/or Lien Records and What is Needed to Obtain?

The following parties are authorized to receive tag, title and/or lien information with acceptable proof of interest as shown below, when required, and the required research fees.

  • Licensed Motor Vehicle Dealer. If you are a licensed Georgia motor vehicle dealer, your twelve-digit (12) permanent MVD-issued dealer identification number must be submitted with your request for information. If you are an out-of-state dealer, a copy of your valid state-issued license must accompany your request.
  • Owner of Vehicle. If you are not the owner of the vehicle, according to our current tag and title records, proof of ownership must be submitted with your request for tag, title and/or lien information that includes the purchase or transfer of the vehicle from the vehicle owner according to our current tag and title records.
  • Judgment Creditor of the vehicle's owner. A certified copy of the fi.fa. must be submitted with the required research fees and your request for tag, title and/or lien information.
  • Attorney-at-Law. An attorney's letterhead request for the information, signed by the attorney, must be submitted with the required research fees, a copy of the attorney's Bar Association card, proof of pending litigation involving a motor vehicle accident and a copy of the accident report or a certified copy of a fi.fa. Information will only be released with proof of pending litigation involving a motor vehicle accident and a copy of the accident report or a certified copy of a fi.fa. A paralegal or a member of the attorney's staff may receive the information if they submit a copy of the attorney’s Bar Association card, a letterhead request for the information signed by the attorney, the required research fees, a copy of pending litigation involving a motor vehicle accident and a copy of the accident report or a certified copy of the fi.fa. and the submitter’s valid driver’s license or government-issued identification card.  
  • Bank or Lending Institution. The bank's or lender's signed letterhead request must be submitted with the required research fees. If the bank's or the lender's lien or security interest is not perfected in our records, a copy of the contract between the record owner and the requesting bank or lender must also be submitted.
  • Insurance Company. A signed letterhead request from the insurance company, the required research fees and a copy of the accident report or other proof of interest must be submitted.
  • Motor Vehicle Manufacturer. For the purpose of a manufacturer recall. The manufacturer must submit a signed letterhead request for this information along with the required research fees.
  • An individual involved in an accident as a passenger, vehicle operator or pedestrian. A copy of the accident report must be submitted along with the required research fees.

Important: When requesting information in person, the requesting party will be required to show their valid driver's license or state-issued identification card.

How to Obtain Motor Vehicle Tag, Title and/or Lien Information?

You may submit your request for tag, title and/or lien information by mail or in-person to this department's Research Unit of the Motor Vehicle Division, together with the required research fees and proof of interest, when required. In-person requests also require a completed and signed Request for Motor Vehicle Data, Form MV-20, and the requester's valid driver's license or state-issued identification card must be shown upon request.

Valid driver's license or state-issued identification card, for in-person requests, and a signed written request or a completed Request for Motor Vehicle Data, Form MV-20, along with proof of interest as shown above, when required, and the required research fees.
