Customer Identification

To be able to complete your customer's MVD tag and/or title application (Form MV-1) correctly, you must ask your customer for identification, their valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. From their identification, you can obtain information needed to complete their MVD tag and/or title application (Form MV-1) .

To be able to register their vehicle and obtain a Georgia license plate for it, your customer will be required to show their valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card and proof of residency in Georgia, i.e. lease, deed or closing statement for new residence, final utility bill from previous residence, moving bill, shipper's bill or truck rental agreement or final paycheck stub or a signed letterhead statement from their former employer. Their application must reflect their Georgia driver's license number or Georgia identification card number; their full legal name and their signature. If jointly owned, each owner's full legal name, valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card number, and signature is required. Some counties require photocopies of the applicant's Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card in addition to copies of proof of residency in Georgia if application is acceptable by mail and is submitted by mail.

Complete the transfer document (title, manufacturer's statement of origin, dealer reassignment, etc.) in your customer's full legal name. An individual's full legal name is his/her complete name as it appears on his/her valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. Your customer's name on the transfer document, application and identification must match!

For vehicles requiring a Georgia title, you, the selling dealer, are required to apply for a Georgia title in your customer's name for the vehicles they purchased from your dealership. Your customer has 30 days from the date of purchase to register the vehicle and obtain a Georgia license plate (tag) or tag transfer. Your customer will be unable to obtain a Georgia tag or tag transfer without either already having a Georgia issued title in their name for the vehicle or without applying for a Georgia title at the time of registration.

Vehicles Not Requiring a Georgia Title

When your customer purchases a vehicle from your dealership that does not require a Georgia title (i.e. 1963-1985 year models), you, the selling dealer, are required to provide your customer with proof of ownership (i.e. Bill of sale and registration certificate, etc.) for their use in registering the vehicle. The bill of sale should be completed in your customer's full legal name.

When applying for a Georgia tag for this vehicle, not requiring a Georgia title, your customer's MVD tag and/or title application (Form MV-1) must be completed in their full legal name showing their valid Georgia driver's license number or Georgia identification card number. Your customer's name on their application, proof of ownership document and identification must match!

If your customer does not have a Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card, they will be unable to register their vehicle and obtain a Georgia license plate (tag).
