Customer Numbers

Who Issues Customer Numbers?

The Georgia Department of Revenue's Motor Vehicle Division issues customer numbers. An individual's customer number is the number shown on his or her state-issued identification card. Click here to connect to the Department of Driver Services for additional information regarding driver's license.

When Were Customer Numbers Issued to Dealers and Security Interest Holders?

In 1999, the Motor Vehicle Division issued a unique permanent twelve-digit (12) customer number to each dealer and lien or security interest holder in our database. A letter including their number was mailed to each asking that they use their assigned number when processing motor vehicle transactions with either the state or county.

What Are the Benefits of Using Customer Numbers?

By using customer numbers, it expedites the title and tag issuance process by eliminating unnecessary key strokes (data entry). County and state personnel processing tag and/or title transactions enter a customer number to retrieve the full legal name and address of the following customers and performs sight verification to ensure that the correct party's name and/or address appears:

  • Owner(s);
  • Selling party; and/or
  • Security interest holder(s).

Insures that license plates and titles are issued to the correct owner(s) by using their full legal name(s) as shown on his or her valid Georgia driver's license or state-issued identification card.

How Can I Obtain a Customer Number?
Individuals

When you obtain a Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card, the number on your license or identification card is your customer number. Click here to connect to the Department of Driver Services for additional information regarding driver's license and/or state-issued identification cards.

Dealers, Distributors, Manufacturers and Transporters

Dealers, Distributors, Manufacturers and Transporters are issued a permanent customer number when they purchase their first Master Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer or Transporter license plate (tag). Their permanent MVD assigned customer number can be found on their receipt for their current master tag (Their first tag costing $62). When a Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer or Transporter, currently holding a valid tag, applies for the renewal of their tags for the next tag cycle (2004-2005), they must enter their twelve-digit MVD assigned customer number in the space provided on the new MV-6 and MV-6A applications. Click here for more information regarding the renewal of Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer and/or Transporter tags for the next tag cycle (2004-2005).

Security Interest Holders

A security interest holder may request a customer number by mailing or faxing a signed letterhead request to: Attention: Director's Office, Motor Vehicle Division, P O Box 740381, Atlanta, GA 30374-0381, FAX Number: (404) 362-6463. If titles are to be mailed to different branches, a separate customer number must be requested and used for each branch.

How Do I Change Our Name and Address?
Individuals

First, you should change your name and/or address on your Georgia driver's license or state-issued identification card with the Department of Driver Services. For information regarding drivers' licenses and/or state-issued identification cards, contact the Department of Driver Services. Click here to connect to the Department of Driver Services.

Secondly, you should apply for a name and/or address change on your title(s) and/or registration certificate(s) at your County Tax Commissioner's office where you currently reside. Click here to view what is needed to make these changes. There is no charge when there is only an address change to your license plate registration certificate (tag receipt).

Dealers, Distributors, Manufacturers and Transporters

A Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer and Transporter, must first change their name and address with the appropriate state licensing agencies (State Board of Registration of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers/Parts Dealers, Sales and Use Tax Division of the Department of Revenue and/or the State Fire Marshal's Office).

Secondly, they should submit the following to this Department's Special Tags Unit of the Motor Vehicle Division for an address change only:

There is no charge for an address change nor are they required to turn in their tags. Name changes require the surrender of their existing tags and the issuance of new tags. Click here for information pertaining to obtaining new tags under their new name.

A Dealer, Distributor, Manufacturer or Transporter should discontinue using their customer number assigned to their previous company name. Their new permanent customer number can be found on their receipt for their new master tag (First tag - Cost: $62).

Security Interest Holders

A lien or security interest holder should first change their name and/or address with the appropriate state licensing agencies (i.e. Department of Banking and Finance, etc.). They should then mail or fax a signed letterhead name and/or address change request to: Attention: Director's Office, Motor Vehicle Division - DOR, P O Box 740381, Atlanta, GA 30374-0381. FAX Number: (404) 362-6463. Requests for name and/or address changes must include the security interest holder's MVD assigned customer number. For name changes, a new number will be issued. For address change request only, a new number will not be issued.

Please discontinue using the customer number associated with your previous name and start using your new customer number when processing motor vehicle transactions with either the counties or state.

Once your address has been changed (for address changes only) with this Department's Motor Vehicle Division, you may continue using your MVD assigned customer number. A new number will not be issued when only your address has changed.
