Acceptable and Unacceptable Corrections

Title Face Corrections

Alterations or corrections to the face of a title or manufacturer's statement of origin (except when corrected by the issuing agency) are unacceptable and require the issuance of a new title or statement of origin by the issuing agency showing correct information.

Corrections to Assignments

Correct errors in recording information in a title or statement of origin assignment as follows:

  • Lightly line through the incorrect information leaving it still visible. The person processing the transaction must be able to see what was originally entered to ensure the correction is not being made to hide information.
  • Enter the correct information legibly above the ‘lined through' information.
  • Person(s) required to complete the assignment should complete an Affidavit of Correction, Form T-11, explaining the reason for the correction. For example, customer backed out of the sale, etc.
Unacceptable Corrections

Important: An Affidavit of Correction, Form T-11 , cannot be used to correct the following:

  • An incorrectly recorded lien or security interest holder*;
  • An incorrectly entered odometer reading. An odometer discrepancy requires the completion of Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit(s), Form T-107 , or ,
  • The vehicle's purchase or transfer date. Corrections to the purchase or transfer date require one of the following:
    • Payment of a $10.00 title penalty,
    • A copy of the front and back of the check between the seller and the buyer supporting the purchase or transfer date change; or
    • You must obtain a replacement title or statement of origin from the issuing agency for proper assignment with the correct date.

*A lien release is required from an incorrectly entered lien or security interest holder.

Discrepancy in Recording Odometer Reading

A completed Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit, Form T-107 , is required to correct an incorrectly recorded odometer reading. Transferors/Sellers entering an incorrect reading should complete top portion of a T-107 (Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit) to include the correct reading and the reason for originally entering incorrectly.

Persons acquiring ownership from the persons completing the top portion of the Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit, Form T-107 , should acknowledge the correction by completing the bottom portion of the Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit, Form T-107 .

To ensure everyone in the chain of ownership, since the discrepancy occurred, is aware of the discrepancy, additional affidavits may be needed.

Apply for a new title by submitting the Odometer Discrepancy Affidavit(s), Form T-107 , by mail or in-person to your County Tag Office or to this department's Motor Vehicle Division with the following:

  • A completed MVD tag and/or title application, Form MV-1 , - typed, electronically completed and printed or legibly hand printed in blue or black ink in the vehicle owner(s)' full legal name(s) showing the correct odometer reading. The appropriate box on this application must be checked when the vehicle's odometer does not reflect the total actual miles the vehicle has traveled. The vehicle owners should sign this completed application. An individual's full legal name is his/her complete name as it appears on his/her valid driver's license. For individual owners, each owner's full legal name, driver's license number, state of issue and signature is required.
  • Original valid Georgia title
  • Any other required supporting documents;
  • Cash, check or money order for the total fees due payable to the office processing the transaction, Office of the Tax Commissioner or the Department of Revenue. Please do not remit cash through the mail!
    • $18.00 title fee
    • A $10.00 title penalty is due if the vehicle owner has failed to apply for a title in his/her name within 90 days of the purchase or transfer date. This title penalty is not due if the vehicle is currently titled in the applicant's name in another state.
    • A $10.00 additional title penalty is due when an application for a Georgia title was previously submitted for this vehicle in the current owner's name and the application was returned requesting additional action before title issuance and compliance has not been made within 60 days of the accompanying letter's date.
Unacceptable Correction - Requires New Title or Statement of Origin
  • Use of correction fluid,
  • Erasures; or
  • Total blocking out of information.
  • ‘Backed-Out' Sale Exception

When someone ‘backs out of a sale' after the assignment has been completed, lightly line through all of the incorrect information pertaining to the transaction (excluding the lien information, where a lien release is required). As the selling dealer, you should then complete an Affidavit of Correction, Form T-11 , explaining why the correction was made and attach it to the title.

When the vehicle is resold, enter the new owner information above the lined through information. In this case,

  • The odometer reading should either stay the same or increase in number.
  • The purchase date should remain the same or be a later date.
