How do I change my address on my registration certificate?

First change your address on your Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. Click here to connect to the Department of Driver Services to find out how to change your address on your Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card.

Secondly, you should apply for an address change on your Georgia registration certificate (tag receipt) at the tax commissioner's office in the county in Georgia where your new residence is located. For the address and telephone number of your county tax commissioner's office, click here. Some counties require you to come in-person to make such changes. To apply, submit the following to their office:

1. When applying in-person, you will be required to show your valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card reflecting your new address. If application by mail is acceptable in your county, you may be required to submit a copy of your valid Georgia driver's license or state-issued identification card reflecting your new address.

2. A completed MV-1 application - Except for your signature, this application must be typed, electronically completed and printed; or printed legibly by-hand in blue or black ink in the registered owner's full legal name showing their new address. Post office boxes are not acceptable. A post office box number may be shown when shown with a street address. A natural person's full legal name is his or her complete name as it appears on his or her valid Georgia driver's license or Georgia identification card. If the vehicle is jointly owned, each owner's full legal name and signature is required. For each natural person, enter their valid Georgia driver's license number or Georgia identification card number in the spaces provided.

3. The current Georgia registration certificate (tag receipt). Please retain a copy for your files.

4. When applying my mail, please include a note indicating the type of change you are requesting, i.e. address change.

5. Acceptable proof of Georgia liability insurance coverage.*

*Your vehicle must have continuous Georgia liability insurance coverage. Click here to read important information regarding your responsibility to maintain continuous Georgia liability insurance coverage on your vehicle, what is acceptable proof of coverage and what vehicles are exempt from insurance coverage.

If your new residence is in a county requiring an emission's inspection, you must submit proof that your vehicle has passed an emission's inspection. For more information regarding emission's inspections, please contact the Georgia Clean Air Force or click here to connect to their web site.

There is no charge when applying for only an address change on your registration certificate; however, if you are applying for the address change during your registration period, additional fees and taxes will be due, i.e. annual registration fee; ad valorem tax; etc. Click here to find out the amount of fees/taxes due during your registration period. The registration period for a natural person in most counties in this state is the thirty-day (30) period of time ending at midnight on the primary owner's birthday. The primary owner is the owner whose name is shown first on the registration certificate. Click here to determine your registration period in your new county of residence.

For additional information regarding your registration certificate, please contact your county tax commissioner's office.
